Located in Brooklyn, Marius & Co. is a neighborhood market of prepared foods and specialty items that serves the local community. It was founded in 2017 by Mitro Valsamis, Kimberly Valsamis, Agata Podedworny, and James Dale, who is one of the market’s chefs along with Angie Peccini. Named for Mitro’s father, Marius & Co. is known for specialty items including Captain Smolders smoked salmon and kedgeree — an Indian dish of curry, rice, and fish; an eclectic selection of cheese and charcuterie; such comfort food favorites as rotisserie chicken and homemade macaroni and cheese; and daily specials inspired by the cultural influencers of the chefs and owners.
Message from Founder Mitro Valsamis
The story of Marius & Co. starts in Fort Greene almost 60 years ago. In 1969, as the decade wound to a close, a man from Greece named Marius Valsamis moved his young family to an amazing carriage house on Vanderbilt Avenue. That man was my father and I was just seven years old. I asked my father why he chose this place. He spoke to me about the trees, the architecture, and the public transportation. He correctly predicted that one day Fort Greene would be one of the most desirable neighborhoods in all of New York, the city he loved so much.
My father Marius was what we call a Renaissance man. He was a doctor, a professor, a lover of music and the arts, a fencer, a fly fisherman, and a race-car driver. Above all, he loved family and food. His parents lived with us, and we all ate great meals together prepared by my mom and grandmother. Meals of Greek, French, Italian, and Asian influence were all on our family menu.
As I started talking with my co-founders about a neighborhood prepared foods market, it seemed natural to name it in his honor. Our desire is to prepare delicious meals from fresh non-GMO ingredients and bring them to you at a great value. We want you to eat food that represents the things that Marius held dear: food of uncompromising quality made with love and family in mind.

Known for its unique flavor, Captian Smolders is the specialty brand of New Zealand style smoked salmon made in house at Marius & Co. by “Captain” James Dale, one of the market’s local chefs, and sold exclusively at Marius & Co, Sahadi’s, and Greene Grape Provisions.
